How to Plan the Perfect Sunset Family Photoshoot with Three Kids and a Dog

Writer's picture: Maria WilkensMaria Wilkens

When Letitia reached out to me about capturing her beautiful family, I could tell it was going to be a session filled with joy and personality. With three kiddos full of energy and a dog they simply couldn’t leave behind, it was bound to be an unforgettable experience. As a photographer who loves including furry family members, I was thrilled by the challenge and the opportunity to create something magical.

Choosing the Right Location

The backdrop of a family photoshoot can make all the difference, and Letitia’s choice of Makorori Beach was simply perfect. Known for its breathtaking sunsets and expansive shoreline, Makorori provides a stunning canvas for family portraits. While Letitia’s family lives in Tolaga Bay, they were more than happy to make the trip to Gisborne for this idyllic location.

If you’re planning a photoshoot, don’t hesitate to choose a location that feels special, even if it means traveling a bit. It’s worth it!

Styling the Session

Styling plays a crucial role in how the final photos come together, and Letitia absolutely nailed it. We collaborated closely, with me sharing my client wardrobe guide and tips on color palettes that would work beautifully with the beach’s tones.

For sunset shoots, I recommend neutral hues—think sandy beige, dusty pinks, burnt reds—with subtle pops of color to add depth. Letitia’s family coordinated effortlessly, blending chic style with comfort so everyone, even the kids, felt free to move and play. This balance allowed us to capture natural, authentic moments.

The Day of the Photoshoot

On the day of the session, the conditions were quintessentially Gisborne: windy but full of charm. The breeze added an element of playfulness to the photos, with hair tousled and clothes swaying in the wind.

The kids—a lively bunch of three—couldn’t contain their excitement. They ran barefoot across the sand, and even their four-legged sibling joined in on the fun. Letting the children explore and express themselves brought out their personalities and made the session feel relaxed and genuine.

As a photographer, I’ve learned that embracing the chaos of kids being kids often leads to the most heartfelt images. Instead of forcing poses, we leaned into their playful energy, capturing moments of pure joy.

The Results: Gorgeous Memories

The pink sunset that evening was the cherry on top, painting the sky in hues that perfectly complemented the family’s outfits. Despite the windy conditions, or maybe because of them, the photos radiated warmth and connection.

Reading Letitia’s reaction to the photos was the ultimate reward. It’s moments like these that remind me why I’m passionate about what I do. These images are more than pictures; they’re memories frozen in time, cherished by the family for years to come.

Conclusion

Looking back on this incredible photoshoot, I’m reminded of the beauty that comes from combining the perfect location, thoughtful styling, and genuine family connections. Letitia’s family showed that even with three kids and a dog, a photoshoot can be a joyful and seamless experience.

If you’re considering a family session, don’t shy away from including your pets or letting your kids run wild. These are the moments that make your family unique and your photos truly special.

Have ideas for your own family photoshoot? I’d love to hear them! Let’s create something magical together.
