Top 10 Family Photography Spots in Gisborne

Hidden Gems

Gisborne, New Zealand, is a paradise for photographers, offering a variety of stunning locations perfect for capturing family moments. Whether you're a local or visiting, these top 10 family photography spots in Gisborne will provide breathtaking backdrops for your next photo session.

1. Midway Beach

For those seeking golden hues and a beautiful sunset, Midway Beach is ideal, especially in winter when the sun is low. The dry grass reflects the sunlight, creating bright, golden images perfect for family sessions. 🌞

2. Waikanae Beach

Waikanae Beach is another beautiful coastal spot with expansive sandy shores. It’s a great location for sunset sessions, where the changing colors of the sky reflect on the water, adding a magical touch to your family photos. Keep in mind that it is the central Gisborne beach, so it can get a bit crowded during the weekend.

3.Okitu Beach

Okitu Beach is known for its surf and stunning views. It surely is one of my favourites for family photos, because of it's soft white sand and turquoise water colour. The beach's rugged beauty and green hills offer a striking backdrop for family photos. If you're after pinky sunsets, that's your spot! Whether we’re capturing action shots of your family playing in the waves or relaxed portraits on the sand, Okitu Beach provides endless opportunities.

4.Makorori Beach

Another one of my favorites is Makorori Beach. It’s wild and gorgeous, often giving us the entire place to ourselves. With stunning views of both high hills and the sea, it’s perfect for engagement and maternity photos. The shots turn out like a fairytale - a bit moody and mysterious. 💫

5. Kaiti Hill (Titirangi Reserve)

For a panoramic view of Gisborne and its coastline, Kaiti Hill is unbeatable. The lookout points provide a stunning backdrop of the city, the Pacific Ocean, and nearby hills. Early morning or late afternoon sessions here can capture the golden light, making your family photos truly spectacular. Beware, it can get quite windy and cold up there, so I wouldn't recommend this spot in winter.

6. Eastwoodhill Arboretum

Known as the National Arboretum of New Zealand, Eastwoodhill is a stunning location with an array of exotic and native trees. The vibrant colors of the foliage, especially in autumn, create a magical setting for family photos. The well-maintained trails and open spaces are ideal for capturing both posed and candid shots.

7. Gisborne Botanical Gardens

The Gisborne Botanical Gardens are perfect for capturing vibrant, colorful family photos. With a variety of flowers, plants, and beautifully landscaped areas, the gardens offer a diverse range of settings. It provides shade during brighter hours, allowing us to shoot even during the day if needed. 🌳

8. Grey Bush Reserve

Grey Bush Reserve is a hidden gem in Gisborne, offering a true native bush experience. It’s a peaceful spot for family photos, with trails that lead through picturesque greenery. The reserve’s tranquility and natural beauty provide a perfect backdrop for intimate family moments.

9. Sponge Bay Beach

Dramatic rock formations, green hills rolling onto the beach, white soft sand and crystal clear waters - this little spot is a true treasure here in Gisborne. The beach is very small and secluded. The only access to it is down quite steep stairs, so it might not be suitable for exteneded family sessions or people who need an easy access.

10. Waihirere Domain

Waihirere Domain is a picturesque location with lush greenery, tall trees, and tranquil streams. This serene park offers a variety of natural backdrops for family photos, from shaded forest areas to open grassy fields. The domain's peaceful ambiance makes it an ideal spot for capturing intimate family moments and playful interactions amidst nature.
